Whether you hanker after dining with a Blue Lagoon view, seafood from the North Atlantic, or a relaxed kitchen counter experience, there’s an eatery in Iceland with your name on it. 

The following list of Iceland’s best restaurants has been compiled with the help of seasoned foodies, as well as my own travels.

When it comes to dining out in Iceland, this is the super seven. So be sure to secure your table at one of these Michelin restaurants in Iceland as soon as you can.

1. ÓX

Address: Laugavegur 55, Reykjavík 101

Accolade: One Michelin Star

Best for: An exclusive experience

ÓX Restaurant Iceland

Only 17 covers at a time can be catered for at Michelin-starred ÓX in Reykjavík.

Chef Thrainn Freyr Vigfusson is at the helm, and the restaurant offers tasting menus to take you on a culinary journey comprising multiple courses. 

Though the food is refined, it’s a laid-back experience, where you take a pew at the counter before tucking into a kitchen table feast.

Expect to socialise with other diners, a palate-pleasing depth of flavour, and a seamless blend of classic and contemporary influences. 

2. Moss

Address: Blue Lagoon, Norðurljósavegur 11, Grindavík 240

Accolade: One Michelin Star

Best for: Blue Lagoon views

One of Iceland’s most famous sights, the Blue Lagoon, provides the stunning setting for a memorable meal at Moss.

With a Michelin star to its name, the eatery also offers views over the surrounding lava fields and moss-clad rocks. 

Moss Restaurant

There’s a vegan version of the tasting menu, which features five to seven courses. Food-wise the focus is on fresh, local produce, and imaginative twists on Icelandic classics.

Book the Chef’s table to watch the magic unfold. You can also order wine to accompany your food from Moss’s underground cellar. 

3. DILL

Address: Laugavegur 59, Reykjavík 101

Accolade: One Michelin Star and a Green Star 

Best for: Meeting the chefs

If you wonder about the people behind the Michelin-starred cuisine you’re being served, book a table at DILL in Reykjavík.

Here you can not only meet the chefs, but have every dish delivered and elucidated by them too. 

DILL is an atmospheric, first floor establishment with a strong commitment to sustainability.

The unique Icelandic landscape provides inspiration for the menu, which is centred on fresh, locally sourced produce.

Foraged ingredients also feature at this restaurant, which was the first in Iceland to be awarded a Michelin star. 

4. Sumac

Address: Laugavegur 28, Reykjavík 101

Accolade: Michelin Recommended 

Best for: Middle Eastern fare

SUMAC Iceland

Along the road from DILL is a place that’s perfect for those seeking something deliciously different.

Sumac is all about Lebanese cuisine, with rustic decor reflecting the Middle Eastern capital, and featuring concrete walls. 

Charcoal grilled dishes packed with Middle Eastern and North African flavours are the name of the game at Sumac.

The meze menus are ideal for sharing and sampling while enjoying the casual ambience. 

5. Matur og Drykkur

Address: Grandagarður 2, Reykjavík 101

Accolade: Michelin Recommended 

Best for: Icelandic tradition

Also Michelin-recommended is Matur og Drykkur in Reykjavík. Contemporary takes on traditional Icelandic fare is at the centre of things here.

In fact, Matur og Drykkur is named after a classic Icelandic cookbook. 

This welcoming establishment caters for all, with a children’s menu and decent vegetarian dishes.

Service is friendly and efficient, and the Saga Viking museum can also be found at the same address. 

6. Brút

Address: Radisson Blu 1919 Hotel, Pósthússtræti 2, Reykjavík 101

Accolade: Michelin Recommended

Best for: Seafood and wine

Whether you have a soft spot for seafood or it’s all about the wine, Brút in Reykjavík is a dining destination.

Get to the Radisson Blu 1919 Hotel before it bags a Michelin star, for top quality fishy fare and a vibrant atmosphere. 

It’s a relaxed place to be, with exposed pipework, stone flooring, and cosy padded benches.

This restaurant has firmly established itself on the Icelandic dining scene, despite only opening in 2021.

Brút also offers an impressive wine list, as well as fabulous seafood. 

7. TIDES

Address: Austurbakki 2, Reykjavík 101

Accolade: Michelin Recommended 

Best for: All-day dining

This Reykjavík restaurant’s name is a dead giveaway when it comes to the sort of food you can expect.

As at Brút, fresh seafood at TIDES is a star of the show – along with succulent, locally sourced cuts of meat. 

TIDES boasts a stunning setting, by the harbour and the ocean, and backed by mountains.

Somewhat unusually, it offers all-day dining, opening daily for breakfast at 7am. It also offers a Bar Bites menu between midday and 10pm, as well as lunch and dinner service.
