Ultimate guide to visiting beautiful Lindos in Rhodes

Beautiful Lindos Beach and Town

Nestled on the eastern coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, Lindos is a charming village steeped in history and beauty.

I loved meandering through its narrow, winding streets, finding myself surrounded by whitewashed houses, ancient ruins, and breathtaking views of the crystal-clear sea.

This picturesque village offers an idyllic escape for those seeking an authentic taste of Greece.

The crowning jewel of Lindos is the magnificent Acropolis that stands proudly atop a towering hill overlooking the village.

Trust me when I say that the climb up the steep steps to get there is well worth it! On the way, discover ancient structures, such as the Temple of Athena Lindia, a Byzantine fortress, and remnants from the Knights of St. John.

From the top, my breath was taken away by the panoramic views of the village, the sparkling coastline, and the shimmering waters of St. Paul’s Bay.

In addition to its rich historical sites, Lindos offers a blend of traditional Greek experiences with modern tourist amenities.

As you explore the village, I’d recommend dining in one of the local tavernas serving mouth-watering Greek cuisine, browsing the vibrant shops for unique souvenirs, or basking in the sun on the pristine beaches that hug the coastline.

With its harmonious blend of culture, history, and natural beauty, Lindos has established itself as a captivating destination waiting to be discovered.

I adored this spot in Rhodes and I know you’re going to love it too.

Where is Lindos?

Lindos is located on the eastern coast of Rhodes, a stunning Greek island in the Dodecanese group.

Rhodes is nestled in the southeastern Aegean Sea, making Lindos a prime spot for those seeking a beautiful coastal retreat.

Drone View of Lindos Bay

Lindos is approximately 50 kilometres south of the island’s capital, Rhodes Town.

It’s easily accessible by car or public transport, with buses running frequently between the two destinations.

How to get to Lindos

If you’re travelling from Rhodes airport, you have several transportation options to reach Lindos, about 50 kilometres away.

By car: Hiring a car at the airport is a popular choice, as it gives you the freedom to explore the island at your leisure.

Many car rental agencies are available upon arrival, and the drive to Lindos takes approximately 1 hour.

The route is well signposted, following the coastal roads through villages like Faliraki and Kalathos.

Note that you won’t be able to park in the village itself as it’s pedestrian only – but I’d recommend making use of the parking available further down the hill closer to the beach.

By taxi: Taxis are readily available at the airport and will take you directly to Lindos.

The journey typically costs around €75–€85 depending on the time of day and allows for a comfortable and hassle-free ride.

By bus: For a more budget-friendly option, take a bus from the airport to Rhodes Town.

From there, transfer to a bus bound for Lindos. Tickets for the bus route from Rhodes Town to Lindos cost around €5, and the journey takes about 1.5 hours.

Bus schedules can be found at the airport and at Rhodes Town’s main bus station.

By boat: Alternatively, several boat tours operate from Rhodes Town harbour, offering a scenic journey along the coastline to Lindos.

How to get around Lindos

Vehicles are not allowed within the village of Lindos, making walking the only real option for getting around the town itself.

Lindos is a small town with many narrow streets and an overall pedestrian-friendly environment. In fact I love the lack of cars, as it’s what makes the village so charming!

Plus, walking allows you to appreciate the area’s scenic beauty and ancient architecture at your leisure.

Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and carry a bottle of water during the summer months, as temperatures can get quite high.

I also found the ground to be quite slippery due to the incredibly smooth pebbles. So I’d recommend ensuring you have shoes with good grip, so you’re not clinging onto the walls like I was on any steep descents!

You can also walk down to Lindos beach and to St Paul’s Bay, although you could hop in a taxi or on a bus to save yourself the effort (which I’d definitely recommend if it’s really hot).

How long to spend in Lindos

If you’re just visiting the village and the Acropolis, you can just about do it in half a day. But I’d recommend spending at least one full day in Lindos so you can enjoy it at a more leisurely pace.

To fully appreciate this charming region, you could easily spend at least two to three days in the area.

This allows sufficient time to explore its main attractions, unwind on the beautiful beaches, and soak up the unique atmosphere.

Example three-day itinerary for Lindos

On your first day, take the opportunity to visit the Acropolis of Lindos, where you’ll find immaculate views over the village and sea.

You should also take time to stroll around the narrow, cobbled streets, where you can admire traditional architecture and experience the local culture.

On your second day, unwind at one of Lindos’ superb beaches.

The most popular choice is St Paul’s Bay, a picturesque bay with golden sands and clear waters. It’s perfect for swimming and snorkelling or simply relaxing in the sun.

Another option is Pallas Beach, a charming spot with calm waters, ideal for families and those who prefer a more tranquil setting.

For visitors with additional time, there are several options for day trips or further exploration in the area.

Nearby attractions include the Valley of the Butterflies, a beautiful nature reserve, and the ancient site of Kamiros.

I’d also recommend booking one of the many boat trips available from Lindos to explore nearby islands and bays.

Acropolis of Lindos Drone

Climbing up to the Acropolis of Lindos is definitely one of the best things to do in Lindos – and in Rhodes as a whole. This was one of the highlights of my trip.

This ancient citadel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the magical St Paul’s Bay.

The site has a rich history and showcases incredible architecture. Explore the ruins of the Temple of Athena Lindia, the Hellenistic stoa, and the ancient theatre.

Be sure to book your tickets in advance, as the queue to buy tickets was very long when we visited.

Insider travel tip: If you’re visiting in the summer months, I’d recommend going early to avoid doing the climb in the peak heat of the sun. We made the mistake of visiting at midday and we were a sweaty mess!

2. Wander the village

You simply must spend some time wandering through the enchanting village of Lindos. Stroll through its narrow, cobbled streets lined with charming whitewashed buildings and vibrant pink bougainvillaea.

Look out for all the black and white pebble mosaics too – some date as far back as the 5th century, while others are far more recent.

Insider travel tip: As mentioned earlier, due to the smooth surface of the pebbles, they can be slippery to walk on. So wear appropriate shoes and watch your step!

3. Relax on Lindos Beach
