1. Iceland

Black Sand Beach Iceland November

According to the World Population Review, Iceland has maintained its rank as the safest country in the world for 14 years.

It has a global peace index of 1.124, meaning it has low crime rates and minimal natural disasters.

I recommend Iceland for solo travellers because of its friendly population and breathtaking natural beauty.

Here you’ll find the northern lights, relaxing hot springs, beautiful glaciers, and stunning landscapes.

Of course the one thing you may need to bear in mind with Iceland is its very active volcanoes, which do quite regularly cause travel disruption.

Top attractions

I’d recommend spending the day relaxing and unwinding at the Blue Lagoon. Also be sure to check out Iceland’s black sand beaches and the incredible landscapes of the Golden Circle.

For lovers of fine architecture, I suggest stopping by the beautiful Harpa Reykjavik Conference Hall and the nearby Hallgrimskirkja church.

2. Denmark

Copenhagen Denmark

Denmark is the second safest country in the world, with a global peace index of 1.310, and for good reason.

The country has low crime rates, sound city infrastructure, and excellent healthcare.

Coming to Denmark means you’ll experience its high quality of life, fantastic food, and sophisticated Danish culture.

Top attractions

Denmark is composed of over 400 islands, each with its unique atmosphere. There are countless natural wonders here, but you absolutely can’t miss the breathtaking Møns Klint.

Amusement park lovers should visit LEGOLAND and the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. In fact, Denmark’s capital is one of my favourite European city breaks.

3. Ireland

Kilkenny Castle from the River Nore Ireland

With a global peace index of 1.310, Ireland is one of the safest countries in the world. Although it went down a few points in 2023, it’s still a peaceful and friendly place for tourists.

Ireland may be a tiny island, but it packs a strong punch. It has a plethora of prehistoric sites, panoramic coasts, and breathtaking cliffs for you to see.

Top attractions

Dublin, the capital city of Ireland, is the best place to start your Irish adventure. You can book a tour of its main attractions, like Dublin Castle and the Kilmainham Gaol Museum.

4. New Zealand

Tram in New Zealand

New Zealand is a striking country that has inspired Hollywood films like The Lord of the Rings. It’s full of mystical mountains, fjords, and lakes unlike anywhere else.

Of course, the best part about New Zealand is its safety. First-time travellers can feel at ease as they explore the many wonders this country has to offer.

Top attractions

One of the top attractions of New Zealand is the Hobbiton Movie Set – perfect for film lovers.

That said, if you want to see more of this country’s beauty, I recommend the Wai-Tapu Geothermal Park and the Milford Sound.

5. Austria

Salzburg Austria

Apart from a few petty crimes like pickpocketing, Austria is a very safe country for tourists. It has a global peace index of 1.316, which isn’t far from Ireland.

For me, the highlights of Austria are its towering mountains and rolling meadows. It’s the real-life location for the Sound of Music.

Top attractions

Austria is the home of the World Heritage City, Salzburg. It’s a beautiful city that you can use as a base as you explore the Mirabell Gardens, Hellbrunn Palace, and the Leopoldskron Lake.

Personally, I love Austria for its skiing and snowsports in the winter months. Have a read of my Austria ski guides if you’re thinking of booking a trip:

6. Singapore

Gardens By The Bay Singapore

According to Forbes, Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world because of its strong structures and high digital security.

It’s a great introductory place for those who want to travel to Southeast Asia.

Singapore is a hub of modernity, innovation and jaw-dropping architecture. It’s a truly unique place and one of my favourite travel destinations in Asia.

Top attractions

Be mesmerised by Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic garden with elevated walkways and lush greenery. Stop by the Cloud Forest, which houses an indoor forest and waterfall!

7. Portugal

Yellow trams at Lisbon Portugal

Portugal is an extremely safe country with one of the most stable political climates in the world.

It has the lowest crime rates, but be aware of your belongings, especially in metropolitan cities like Lisbon.

Top attractions

Portugal is a bustling country with cosmopolitan cities, elegant gardens and beautiful beaches.

One of my favourite attractions in Portugal is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a show-stopping monastery from a fairytale.

8. Slovenia

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia is a consistent topper in studies on the world’s safest countries. Part of this is because of the country’s culture and dedicated police force.

Those who come to Slovenia should see its turquoise rivers and snow-capped mountains.

Top attractions

The Vršič Mountain Pass is a popular attraction in Slovenia. You can take in its full magnificence if you stay at one of the upscale alpine resorts nearby.

Of course, Lake Bled is another breathtaking spot in Slovenia, and a place you’ve probably seen all over Instagram.

9. Japan

Mount Fuji view in Japan

Another of the safest countries in the world is the culturally rich and technologically advanced Japan. It’s a hodgepodge of centuries old traditions and modern technology.

You can shop at Shibuya and Shinjuku for the best Japanese fashion brands, then hop on a train and visit the massive Sensoji temple – all within a day.

Top attractions

Perhaps the most famous attraction in Japan is Mt. Fuji. You can book a tour of Hakone Lake, where you get incredible views of the iconic mountain.

Afterwards, be sure to unwind by taking a dip at the Gora Kadan, a luxury hot spring resort previously owned by the imperial family.

10. Switzerland

Bernina Express Switzerland

Switzerland is a country with some of the lowest crime rates in the world. It’s one of my all-time favourite countries to explore.

Those who wish to visit Switzerland can look forward to its grand mountains, glaciers, and lakes.

Top attractions

Zurich is a stunning mediaeval town with plenty of activities for travellers. From here, you can tour the home of Lindt Chocolate, then book a day trip to the Swiss Alps!

Or discover more fairytale towns in Switzerland, such as Spiez, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Interlaken
