Our Living Room Design, Moodboard & Products
For the first of my moodboard posts, I’m starting with the living room! My number one goal for the living room is to achieve a super cosy space.
We’re going to have a small sofa area in the open plan kitchen / dining / entertaining area, so this means we can make the living room all about cosy movie watching.

Layout issues
To be honest, I’m finding the living room pretty difficult to design in terms of layout for various reasons:
- We want to convert the current gas fire into a woodburner, and we don’t yet know whether there will be an internal or external chimney breast.
- We want a big TV for this room, which means putting it either side of the fireplace won’t work, and we don’t want it above the fireplace for practicality reasons.
- We like the idea of a corner sofa for comfort reasons but prefer the look of two separate sofas.
- There’s a bay window which is a lovely feature but does make sofa placement a little harder.
The vision
I feel most at home when I’m in the mountains so I’d like to try and incorporate some subtle nods to that cosy chalet aesthetic.
I’m leaning towards dark coloured sofas primarily for practicality reasons.
My partner is fairly clumsy – my current sofa has traces of red wine, whisky and chocolate on it – plus, my fake tan habit does sometimes make its way onto furniture!
So with all that in mind, here is my moodboard for the living room:
My thoughts
I was toying with the idea of carpet for cosiness, but I’d like to stick with the same flooring as the rest of the downstairs for consistency.
I plan to get a big rug to add warmth and I’m currently sold on the rugs from Ruggable because I love their designs and the fact that they are machine washable. Plus, their Instagram ads have me in a chokehold; what can I say.
I’ve always wanted to have a Loaf sofa because I’ve spent nearly eight years with a fairly uncomfortable sofa that my partner would describe as ‘neck breaking’.
Whether or not we go with a corner sofa or two separate sofas is still to be decided. I like to have my legs up when I’m on the sofa so a corner sofa would be perfect – but I’m also not a fan of how it sits in front of the bay window.
The curtains are more for decorative purposes and warmth – I have absolutely no idea how we’ll hang curtains around the bay window as there is no space for a curtain rod.
I imagine we’ll probably end up getting shutters too, as these will be the most practical option – but my goodness they aren’t cheap!
I’m also planning to include some storage on either side of the fireplace using IKEA units that I’ll make look built-in and pretty (using YouTube tutorials and a can-do attitude!).
Finally, I’ve really got my heart set on a frame TV because I just love the idea of TV looking like a piece of art when not being used.
Not sure how we’re going to afford all this but a girl can dream!

I can’t for the life of me find where I got the wall lights from, but I will probably end up getting one of the rechargeable designs from Pooky.
I’m not necessarily going to go with these exact versions listed above, as I’ll need to shop around to get the best price (this renovation is slowly but surely bankrupting me!).
