Le Negresco Hotel review: a luxurious stay in the heart of Nice

Le Negresco Suite Bed

Le Negresco is an icon among hotels on the French Riviera. Its prominent pink dome can be seen from miles away, serving as a beacon of legend and luxury on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.

The hotel opened in 1913 and has since become a symbol of French prestige and sophistication. In 1957, Jeanne Augier purchased the hotel and curated its elaborate collection of artwork and furniture. From the classic to the contemporary, the art and decoration in the hotel span from Louis XIII to the modern art of the current era.

Le Negresco is more than just a hotel; it’s a work of art. The hotel’s exterior is an exquisite example of Belle Epoque architecture, with its pink dome and ornate balconies. While the grandeur of the interiors is utterly breathtaking. Vast marble floors, sparkling chandeliers and palatial suites fit for royalty make for the most sophisticated setting.

The hotel also boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant, a bar, a concierge service and a private beach club. Plus, a resplendent spa is currently being developed and due to open in Autumn 2023. What more could you possibly need from a luxury hotel?

I had the pleasure of staying at Le Negresco earlier this year and I had the most exceptional stay. Here is my honest review.

Location

Le Negresco Hotel is located on the famous Promenade des Anglais. Its prime position offers both easy access into the centre of Nice, as well as heavenly views of the Mediterranean Sea and Baie des Anges.

The hotel’s location is perfect for those looking to explore the city’s rich history and culture. Le Negresco is just a short walk from the Musée Masséna, the Nice Opera House, and the Place Masséna.

The Old Town is a 20 minute walk away – no complaints when the walk involves a wander along the lively Promenade des Anglais on the seafront.

The beautiful Old Town is where many of the top attractions in Nice can be found. It’s also the place to find boutique shops and bars, cosy restaurants and lively markets.

Rooms and suites

Le Negresco offers 102 rooms and 26 suites, each with its unique theme inspired by different eras of French art or travels from further afield. The decor combines antique furniture, plush fabrics and modern amenities for the perfect marriage of style, comfort and functionality.

All rooms are spacious, beautifully designed and equipped with all the amenities you’d expect from a five-star hotel.

Marie Leszczynska Suite Bedroom

I was lucky enough to stay in the Marie Leszczynska Suite and I honestly can’t think of a better hotel room that I’ve stayed in.

Inspired by the Louis XV epoch, the impeccable interiors are reminiscent of Versailles in all its splendour and magnificence. In fact, this suite has the same fabric supplier as the Palace of Versailles – say no more.

Le Negresco Suite Bed

The bed in our suite was sumptuously comfortable. It’s always a good sign when it’s a real struggle to get out of bed in the morning!

Marble floors and marble walls in the bathroom create an opulent sanctuary, complete with a spacious shower, a double sink and huge bathtub with jets and lights. High quality toiletries and fluffy towels are the perfect finishing touch.

A spacious balcony proved to be the ideal spot for a glass of Champagne while soaking up the gorgeous sea views.

Dining

There are two restaurants at Le Negresco hotel: contemporary brasserie La Rotonde and the Michelin-starred Le Chantecler

Le Chantecler Negresco

For something special, Le Chantecler offers an exquisite dining experience. Chef Virginie Basselot has created an unforgettable gastronomic experience.

The restaurant’s menu is inspired by the Mediterranean region and features only the freshest and highest quality ingredients.

As you’d expect from a Michelin star, the service is also outstanding; discrete where it needs to be but with a touch of showmanship when flambéeing or carving meat in front of the guests.

Alternatively, La Rotonde is the perfect place for a relaxed lunch or an evening meal with delicious cuisine and a laid-back atmosphere. It’s also where breakfast is served for hotel guests.

I’d recommend sitting out on the terrace if the weather permits, as it’s a lovely spot for an alfresco meal. The menu is characterised by traditional French cuisine that’s packed with flavour and presented beautifully. Service is first-class too, with friendly and attentive staff.

Le Negresco Beach Club

La Plage du Negresco is the hotel’s private beach club. The setting is beautiful, with abundant green foliage and whitewashed furniture.

Negresco Beach Club Loungers

It’s very possible to while away a whole day here. Relax on a sun lounger with your favourite book while the waves lap at the shore. Go for a refreshing dip in the sea then sip a cocktail back on dry land.

Le Negresco Beach Restaurant is another gem of the hotel. Overseen by Michelin-star chef Virginie Basselot, the surf and turf style menu is an absolute delight.

From fresh fish and matured meat to light, flavoursome salads, there is something for every diner. Combining excellent food with a charming setting, this was our favourite beach club in Nice.
