Hotel Nesslerhof Review: A Luxury Alpine Spa Hotel in Austria
Hotel Nesslerhof sits at the far end of the Grossarl Valley, a quiet alpine valley about an hour south of Salzburg. It manages to balance two things that don’t always sit comfortably together: the cosy feel of a traditional Austrian mountain hotel, and the polished, contemporary design of a modern spa retreat.
We visited in winter during the peak of the ski season, when the setting feels particularly atmospheric. The valley is narrow and enclosed by forested slopes, and in the colder months everything is softened by snow.
While larger Austrian ski resorts can feel busy and built-up, Grossarl has a noticeably calmer pace, with just a handful of hotels and a village centre that still feels very much like a working Alpine community.
The family-run Hotel Nesslerhof itself is one of the valley’s standout places to stay. We spent a few days here during the winter season, combining time on the slopes with long afternoons in the spa, and unhurried evenings over multi-course dinners.

Location: the Grossarl Valley
Hotel Nesslerhof is just one hour’s drive south of Salzburg airport in the market town of Grossarl within the Austrian Alps. It’s part of the Ski Amadé region, one of Austria’s largest ski networks – but it feels noticeably quieter than some of the country’s better-known resorts.
The village is compact and traditional, with a handful of hotels, restaurants and ski shops clustered around the base of the lifts. There’s none of the sprawling resort development you find elsewhere in the Alps, which gives the area a more relaxed, local feel.
The main gondola for the Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area is directly opposite the hotel for that unbeatable ski-in ski-out experience. There’s a lovely restaurant and après bar at the top of the gondola, for those who fancy lunch with a view but don’t want to ski or snowboard.
This was perfect for us, as my other half is recovering from knee surgery but could still meet me up the mountain for an aperol… or three.
Rooms & suites
Rooms at Hotel Nesslerhof follow the same design approach seen throughout the hotel: modern alpine style with a focus on natural materials and warm tones. Think plenty of wood, soft lighting, and large windows that frame the surrounding mountains.
We stayed in the ‘Sonnenschein’ Suite, which was spacious and thoughtfully laid out. The large balcony boasted views across the outdoor pool and valley, complete with sun loungers and an outdoor bath. Relaxing in a steaming bath while soaking in the surrounding snowy views was the perfect way to recover my aching post-ski muscles!
Inside, there was a large walk-in shower, double sinks and modern finishes that gave the room a slightly more luxurious feel than the traditional alpine aesthetic might suggest.
Across the hotel there are a variety of other room categories and suites, some designed with families in mind and others with added touches like private saunas.
The spa and wellness area
The extensive spa and wellness area is very much the centerpiece of Hotel Nesslerhof. I loved the heated outdoor pool; it looks out towards the surrounding mountains and catches the sunlight just perfectly.
Inside, the spa continues with a series of saunas and steam rooms, each with slightly different temperatures and atmospheres.
There are also several relaxation rooms designed for quiet downtime, with large windows facing the valley and comfortable loungers where it’s easy to lose track of time – or fall asleep!
Despite the size of the hotel, the spa never felt overcrowded during our stay, and the layout allows guests to spread out across the different spaces.
Food & dining
Dining is another standout aspect of the Nesslerhof experience. The hotel operates on a half-board basis, which means most stays include both breakfast and a multi-course evening dinner.
Breakfast is served buffet-style, with a wide selection of breads, pastries, cheeses, fresh fruit and hot dishes. As with many Austrian hotels, the emphasis is on quality local produce, and the spread easily sets you up for a full day on the slopes or in the mountains.
In the afternoons, the hotel also serves a generous snack offering – something that feels particularly welcome after a day of skiing.
Dinner is a more formal affair, typically structured as a multi-course menu that blends Austrian alpine cuisine with more modern European influences. The atmosphere remains relaxed rather than overly formal, but the food itself is clearly a point of pride for the hotel.
Things to do in winter
For winter visitors, skiing is naturally the main draw. The nearby Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area offers around 70 kilometres of pistes, with wide, well-maintained runs that are particularly well suited to beginners and intermediate skiers.
Beyond skiing, the valley is also known for winter hiking and snowshoeing, with marked trails leading through forests and across alpine meadows. Sledging is another popular activity, plus there are several traditional mountain huts in the surrounding area where you can stop for lunch or a warming drink.
Of course, one of the advantages of staying at a hotel like Nesslerhof is that there’s no pressure to fill every day with activity. Many guests seem just as happy dividing their time between the mountains and the spa.
My verdict
Hotel Nesslerhof manages to strike a balance that can be surprisingly difficult to achieve: it feels both luxurious and genuinely welcoming. While the spa facilities and dining are impressive, the atmosphere remains relaxed and unpretentious.
The Grossarl Valley itself adds to the appeal. Compared with some of Austria’s larger ski destinations, it feels quieter and more traditional, making it an ideal choice for travellers who want the scenery and outdoor experiences of the Alps without the crowds.
For couples in particular – especially those looking for a winter break that combines skiing, good food and serious spa time – it’s an easy place to settle into for a few days and simply enjoy the rhythm of mountain life.
