2. Ascend to Harder Kulm Viewpoint

Book: Interlaken: Funicular Ticket to Harder Kulm

For simply breathtaking views of Interlaken and the surrounding snow-capped mountains, ascending to the Harder Kulm viewpoint is one of the best things to do in Interlaken.

The journey begins with a funicular ride from Interlaken to Harder Kulm, which is part of the enchanting experience itself.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted with exclusive panoramic views of the iconic Jungfrau region. The viewing platform offers unobstructed views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

Panoramic view of Interlaken from viewpoint of Harder Kulm

I’d recommend treating yourself to a tasty meal or a drink at the restaurant while taking in the views.

For those looking for a more adventurous experience, there are several hiking trails that lead to the Harder Kulm viewpoint.

These trails offer a unique perspective of the mountains and are a great way to experience the beauty of the region.

Good to know: The funicular ride is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues. However, there is a bus service available for those who cannot take the funicular.

3. Get an adrenaline hit with a bungee jump

Book: From Interlaken: Stockhorn Bungee Jump

For those who are looking for a truly exhilarating experience, a bungee jump is one of the best things to do in Interlaken.

There are several companies that offer bungee jumping experiences in the area, and each one has its own unique features.

One popular option for adrenaline-seekers is the Stockhorn bungee jump, where you can jump from a gondola! I think this is such a bucket-list activity!

With a staggering height of 134 metres, it’s not for the faint-hearted. Suspended high above the ground, jumpers get a stunning view of the surrounding mountains before they take the plunge.

Another option I’d recommend is the Lütschine bungee jump, which takes place over the Lütschine River.

This jump offers a unique experience as jumpers freefall towards the river before being pulled back up by the bungee cord.

4. Experience Lake Brienz by boat

Book:

I think that one of the best ways to enjoy the stunning natural beauty of Interlaken is to take a boat ride on Lake Brienz.

With its crystal-clear azure waters and picturesque mountain vistas, Lake Brienz is a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Interlaken.

St Beatus Caves

One of the unique must-visit places to see in Interlaken is the St. Beatus Caves. Located just a few minutes away from Interlaken, the caves are a perfect destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

The St. Beatus Caves are a network of underground caves that were formed millions of years ago.

Named after St. Beatus, a Christian hermit who is said to have lived in the caves during the sixth century, I believe the landmark caves are one of Switzerland’s best kept secrets.

Visitors to the St. Beatus Caves can explore the caves on a guided tour, exploring a series of underground chambers and tunnels.

Each has its own unique rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. The tour is led by knowledgeable guides who provide expert information about the history and geology of the caves.

For me, the highlight of the tour is the underground waterfall. Located deep inside the caves, it’s a truly spectacular sight to behold.

Good to know: The St. Beatus Caves also have a museum that showcases the immense history and culture of the region, with a collection of artefacts and exhibits. I think a visit to this hidden gem is one of the best things to do Interlaken.

6. Take to the skies with a tandem paraglide

Book: Interlaken: Tandem Paragliding Flight with Pilot

For anyone with a hunger for adrenaline and breathtaking views, a tandem paraglide is one of the best things to do in Interlaken.

With experienced pilots, you can soar through the sky and take in the stunning scenery of the Swiss Alps.

The adventure begins with a short hike up the mountain to the launch site. The pilot will provide a safety briefing and gear you up with a harness and helmet.

Then, it’s time to take flight!

Paragliding Interlaken

The views are truly unforgettable and completely exclusive, with snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and lush green valleys stretching out below.

Paragliding flights last for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on weather conditions.

After a smooth landing, you will typically receive a video of your once-in-a-lifetime flight to relive the experience again and again.

Note that tandem paragliding is weather-dependent, so be prepared for re-scheduling if necessary.

Good to know: If you’re susceptible to motion sickness, it’s worth knowing that paragliding can trigger it. I learnt this the hard way!

8. See Interlaken Monastery and Castle

Book: N/A

Interlaken Monastery and Castle is not just for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts. I think it’s a wonderful place to experience the culture and beauty of the Swiss town.

The castle dates back to the 12th century and is a fine example of mediaeval Swiss architecture. Paying a visit to experience the history for yourself is one of the best things to do in Interlaken.

The monastery, on the other hand, is an impressive Baroque-style building that was built in the 18th century.

A designated Swiss Heritage Site of National Significance, the monastery and castle is a snapshot of the past, preserving the authentic Swiss culture of days gone by.

Insider travel tip: From the castle tower, you can enjoy unparalleled panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains. I’d also recommend the monastery’s garden as a charming place to relax and take in the gorgeous views with a picnic.

9. Discover the hiking trails

Interlaken is a true paradise for hikers; its stunning natural scenery and an extensive network of hiking trails impress even seasoned hikers. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a complete beginner, there is a trail for everyone.

My favourite hiking trail in Interlaken is the Eiger Trail which offers breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

The trail is around seven kilometres long and takes about two to three hours to complete. While it is a moderate hike with some steep sections, the views are well worth the effort if you’re able to.

If you’re seeking a challenging hike, I’d recommend the Hardergrat Trail for you. This trail is considered one of the most beautiful yet challenging (and potentially dangerous) hikes in Switzerland.

The trail is about 24 kilometres long and takes about 12 to 14 hours to complete. Much of this trail is on sharply defined ridges, making it unsuitable for some hikers.

Good to know: Other popular hiking trails include the Lake Brienz Trail and Schynige Platte Trail which offer equally stunning views.

10. Have a canyoning adventure

They provide all the necessary equipment and safety gear, including wetsuits, helmets, and harnesses. The guides are highly trained and experienced, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

One of the most popular canyoning routes that I’d recommend is the Chli Schliere canyon, which features a series of exhilarating jumps, slides, and abseils. It’s a challenging route that requires some physical fitness and a sense of adventure.

Another option is the Grimsel canyon, which is suitable for beginners and offers a more relaxed experience.

Good to know: It’s important to remember that canyoning can be a very dangerous activity if not done properly. Always choose a reputable company with experienced guides and follow their instructions carefully.

To get to Giessbach Falls, you can take a ferry from Interlaken to the town of Brienz. From there, a funicular railway takes you up to the falls.

Giessbach Falls

I’d recommend visiting when the snow has thawed in spring, as this will provide the fiercest water flow.

Once at the falls, you can take a short hike to the top for an even better view of the cascading water. The waterfall plunges over 400 metres, making it a true spectacle.

Good to know: You can also marvel at Giessbach Falls from on the water with a jetboat ride on Lake Brienz.

Interlaken Rainbow

Winter season (November to April)

The winter season in Interlaken is from November through to April. The weather is cold, and there is snowfall.

The average temperature during this season is around -2°C. I’d recommend visiting in winter if you’re there for the skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports.

The town also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and paragliding.

Spiez is a picturesque town located on the shores of Lake Thun, known for its mediaeval castle which offers breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
