7 Gorgeous Hotels in Rye, East Sussex
In the fairytale town of Rye, you’ll find everything from tales of smugglers and hidden passageways to stunning coastal views and a thriving food scene.
However, exploring all of this in one day is nearly impossible. To truly soak up all that Rye has to offer, you’ll need a place to stay that matches the town’s charm and character.
Fortunately, I’ve explored some of the best places to stay, each offering its impressive mixture of comfort, character, and history.
Here is my hand-picked selection of the best hotels in Rye for your next visit.

1. The Gallivant

A personal favourite hotel of mine is The Gallivant. To start, this hotel isn’t exactly in Rye; it’s just outside the town, closer to the beach. But I promise you it’s worth it!
The reason this is my first option is because The Gallivant takes you away from the crowds and closer to the tranquillity of the beach.

The menu at the restaurant here focuses on what’s freshly available from the surroundings – the seafood is mouthwatering!
For a quiet stay, this hotel is my go-to option. After a day of exploring, you can relax, enjoy a delicious dinner, and wake up the next day for a dip in the sea.
2. The Mermaid Inn

In complete contrast to the Gallivant, The Mermaid Inn, located on Mermaid Street, is where all the action is.
Each of the inn’s 31 rooms is a piece of history, named after a notable figure from the Inn’s past.
Guests can expect stunning features like carved beds, oak panelling, Caen stone fireplaces, and more.
Some rooms even offer secret stairways, like the one hidden behind a bookcase in Dr Syn’s Bedchamber!
For dining, the 2 AA Rosette restaurant is an experience in itself, with its linen-folded panelled walls and cosy intimate settings.
3. Saltcote Place Rye
Another hotel that offers peace and quiet is the Saltcote Place in Rye. This hotel started as, oddly enough, a wedding present!
It was designed by the renowned architect Sir Reginald Blomfield in The Queen Anne Style for Captain AAR Hennessy and his bride.
Currently, the retreat acts as a peaceful, child-free escape. I love how every detail has been designed with relaxation in mind.
You can start your day with the indulgent “Bubbles at Breakfast,” while complimentary nightcaps in the evening add an extra touch of comfort to your stay.
4. Whitehouse Rye

Whitehouse Rye is a place that feels like a home away from home, with a touch of modern flair.
Located in a Grade II listed Georgian building, this boutique bed & breakfast combines simplicity and charm in its six unique styled rooms.
The real highlight for me? Well, that would be the in-house bakery! Waking up to the scent of freshly baked goods wafting through its walls is the best way to start the day.
The breakfast there is nothing short of indulgent, with chilli jam flatbread, bacon rolls, and fluffy blueberry pancakes.
5. The Standard Inn
This 15th-century pub, located in the heart of Rye, has been lovingly restored to its former glory, revealing beautifully carved beames and welcoming open fires.
Creaky, with gnarled beams, the five rooms are simple yet full of character, offering all the comforts you need after a tiring day of adventures.
Expect Smart TVs, complimentary mineral water, and antique furnishings,
What sets The Standard Inn apart is its award-winning seasonal menu. Think Romney Marsh lamb, or fresh fish delivered from Rye Harbour.
6. The George in Rye

If you’re going to Rye with your significant other, The George in Rye might be your best choice.
It was voted among the Top 10 “Most Romantic Hotels” by The Sunday Times and is listed among the “100 Best Places to Stay in Britain for 2023” by The Times.
Each room at The George in Rye is designed with comfort and elegance in mind.
All rooms feature Vi-spring beds, flatscreen TVs, and chrome power showers, with some offering walk-in showers and roll-top baths.
The food here is mouthwatering, with a menu centred around a wood-charcoal grill that brings out the best in locally sourced seafood and meats.
7. The Lookout Rye

From the outside, The Lookout in Rye can truly look like just another home, blending with the rest of the historic charm of the town.
But, with just one step inside, you’ll quickly realise The Lookout is much more than meets the eye.
The Lookout offers a welcoming atmosphere with tastefully decorated rooms, high-quality furnishings, and modern amenities designed for comfort.
Every room inside features high thread count bed linen and ultra-comfy mattresses, ensuring a restful night’s sleep.
Breakfast at the hotel is a highlight, with freshly baked pastries, seasonal fruit, cheeses, and cold cuts, all served with bottomless tea and coffee!
