Making time for self care and pampering

Making time for self care and pampering

I don’t know about you, but right now I’m finding life rather busy. Constantly rushing from here to there; always a power walk, never a meander. Trying to stay sane whilst maintaining a heavy full-time job and run a successful side hustle. A social life would be nice too. And then you go and accidentally write off a whole weekend because you partied too hard on Friday night. Oops.

With so much going on, I recently came to the realisation that I’ve been ignoring an important aspect of my life: self care. Although I like to think I’m superhuman, I am definitely not. Your mental and physical health should be an absolute priority. You should never be ‘too busy’ to take care of number one.

After a recent health scare, I decided that I needed to start setting aside some time for a bit of self care and pampering. By this I mean taking a step back from the fast paced world in which I operate and just… breathe. How you choose to spend this time is completely your decision.

Digital detox

I don’t recommend just pigging out in front of the TV on a Netflix binge. We do enough of that already (well, I do). This time should be spent free from digital devices. I spend my week sat in front of a computer screen. My side hustle also relies on a computer screen and lots of social media.

We all know the pitfalls of social media and I am becoming more and more aware that excessive use of these channels is making me miserable. There’s lots I love about social media – I couldn’t run my blog with it – but we all need to be aware of how easy it is to let it consume us. This is a whole other blog post, but my point here is that your self-care / me-time / pampering should be devoid of digital.

How to zone out

How you zone out is completely up to you. What works for one person might not for another. For example, I know a lot of people love the benefits of yoga – personally I just can’t get on with it. So however you prefer to relax, here are a few of my ideas:

  • Take a long bath
  • Book a massage
  • Get your nails done
  • Treat yourself to a spa day
  • Simply sit in a jacuzzi for 20 minutes
  • Rewind and reset with yoga
  • Go for a long walk

I’ve only been setting time aside for a spot of self care for a short period of time. Already I feel better and more energised. Plus, I often have my best ideas when I am most relaxed. It gives me a chance to clear my head and I’ve felt a lot more inspired lately.
