The beauty products that have made me smile again

The beauty products that have made me smile again

I do not usually write beauty posts. Primarily because I am inherently lazy when it comes to my skin and makeup routines, having used the same products for years. However, recent events have forced me to carry out endless research and rethink the products I use. Given the time I have put into completely rehashing my skin routine, I thought it was only fair to share it!

In the New Year my face erupted with a strange rash that I had never seen before. I went to my GP and it was diagnosed as a type of dermatitis and I was prescribed steroid cream. After giving this a go, the condition only worsened and in my desperation to find a cure, I went to see a dermatologist. I was duly informed that my diagnosis had been wrong and that the steroid creams had only fed a different type of dermatitis.

Anyway, cut a long story short, I needed to revisit all the products I was using. I was amazed at how many so-called ‘natural’ products marketed by some of the most popular brands, are actually far from it. An expensive couple of months of trying and testing new products every week but I’ve finally cracked it! Here I am going to share the new products I am using and why they are so wonderful.

1. La Roche-Posay Micellar Solution

La Roche-Posay Cleanser

Three out of the five products I am including in this post are from La Roche-Posay, a French brand whose products are all vigorously dermatologically tested. The Micellar Solution is a delightful skin cleanser designed for sensitive skin. It is not greasy, it is not oily and it is not drying. In fact, it’s an absolute pleasure to use, removing all makeup without a hint of stinging or irritation.

2. La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water

La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water

One really interesting thing I learnt in my research was that normal tap water can actually be really harsh on your skin, especially if you live in a hard water area. Instead of using tap water or a toner, I now use this Thermal Spring Water. Simply spray on your face and wipe any excess off with a cotton pad. It’s deliciously refreshing and bursting with healthy minerals.

3. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra

My new go-to moisturiser, the Toleriane Ultra is super soothing and hydrating. It was the first ever facial product to be awarded the seal of approval by Allergy UK. So you really can be safe in the knowledge that this will not irritate your skin.

4. Clinique Superbalanced Silk Foundation

Clinique Superbalanced Silk Foundation

For many years I have been using the Chanel ultra-light skin perfecting makeup. I used to rave about it due to the silky softness and unbeatable lightness. However, I was pretty shocked when I read the ingredients. One ingredient that particularly surprised me was talc, which has caused a lot controversy in recent years. Thought to contain carcinogenic asbestos, its use is restricted across the European Union. I cannot understand why a brand as known as Chanel is still using such substances in their products. More worryingly, the vast majority of people probably have no idea what they are putting on their face. I certainly didn’t.

So, needless to say, I needed to change my foundation. After much trialling, I eventually decided on the Clinique Superbalanced Silk Makeup. It’s nice and natural, plus it looks and feels amazing. My preference is always for really light foundations that have a completely natural look and this definitely ticks all the boxes.

5. Nano Silver

Nano Silver The Health Factory

This product is a bit of a curve ball and you’re probably thinking, what on earth is nano silver?! Well, I’ll tell you. It is mineral water with monatomic, diatomic and nano clusters of silver. Nope, I don’t know what that means either. All you need to know is that silver has some totally awesome antibacterial properties. The nano part means it is super SUPER tiny, is more readily absorbed and can therefore do more to help.

I’ve been squirting this delightful stuff on my face for a couple of weeks now. My face is looking considerably better, although this is more likely to be a combination of factors. Either way, I have heard lots of good things about nano silver so there’s no harm in giving it a go.

My advice

Having a problem like dermatitis, eczema or acne on your face can be truly soul-destroying, especially if you simply cannot find a cure. If you are experiencing something similar, just know that it can be fixed but it may take a little time. My problems have not only been fixed by changing my skin products – I’ve also got prescription creams and I’m on antibiotics for a little while.

I would highly recommend seeing a dermatologist if you can afford to. It costs a lot of money but for me it was worth every penny. Health and well-being are far more important than that new handbag or weekend away. It pays to get the correct diagnosis and treatment.

Even if you don’t have any skin problems, I would still highly recommend these products. I didn’t used to have any skin issues but look where I ended up! We should really give our skin a break from the myriad of damaging ingredients found in so many products. It only took these small changes to leave me with better skin and a smile firmly back on my face.

I would love to hear from you if you’ve experienced something similar. What products did you find worked for you?
